Why Healthcare Careers Are More Diverse Than You Might Think

When people think of working in healthcare, they imagine that they’ll be going to work in a hospital. They also tend to imagine that they’ll have completed many, many years of study before they’re in a paying role.

But that’s not totally true. While you can follow that trajectory, it’s not compulsory. The healthcare sector is extremely large — it’s the largest industry in the country by employment, with more than 20 million workers — and extremely diverse.

That’s good news for people who are considering a career in healthcare, but who don’t want to be limited by having to do things just one way.

In this post, we’re going to run through just some of the reasons why healthcare might be a lot more diverse than you think, outlining some ideas that you might not have considered before.

There Are Different Ways to Enter The Field

Most people think that working in the healthcare sector requires a four-year degree, and perhaps even more. However, while there are some roles for which a four-year degree is compulsory, there are many others where it’s not a strict requirement. Some healthcare positions can be obtained by first taking entry-level roles and working your way up; others through apprenticeships or supported internships. If you have a healthcare career in mind but don’t want to go through a traditional university program, then see if there are other ways to get there — there might just be.

A Healthcare Career Can Take You Abroad

Have dreams of moving abroad? For most people, the main obstacles are getting a visa and finding a job once they’re there. But healthcare professionals are not most people.

Depending on your qualifications and role, you may find that you’re able to secure a visa + job in an overseas country. The UK, New Zealand, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, and Australia are popular destinations for American healthcare professionals.

You Can Work In Fascinating Environments

As we said above, when many people think of healthcare roles, they think of hospitals and healthcare clinics. But actually, healthcare roles exist in all kinds of places, many of which are about as far removed from hospitals as you can imagine. Depending on your qualifications, you may be able to complete a Burning Man EMS team application and work at one of the world’s most famous festivals, or work at major sporting events.

Other healthcare roles exist in off-the-beaten-path destinations, such as in Antarctica or other remote destinations. In other words, if you’re someone who likes to have unique experiences, then a career in healthcare can absolutely help to make them happen.

Healthcare Skills Are Transferable

It’s not just what you can do within the healthcare sector itself that’s fascinating. What you can do with your healthcare experience in other sectors is also pretty interesting. Healthcare skills are highly transferable, so even if that’s where you start your career, that doesn’t mean that it’s where you’ll finish it. Healthcare professionals routinely transfer to other roles that relate to customer service, insurance, education, analysis, legal work, and quality control.
