This intense tactical shooter requires both cooperation, skill and knowledge. Today, I’ll teach you who are the best picks to start with and get accustomed to the game.
With a whopping 74 operators as of February 2025, it’s no wonder someone just getting into the game would have trouble knowing who to pick. So let’s not waste any time and let’s find which operator is best for you!
Of course, once you start the game you’ll see that most of the content is locked, you have to grind to get operators, your rank’s low. It’s a pretty daunting task to get to the good stuff. Luckily, there’s Rainbow Six Siege boosting which can be used to get any skin that you didn’t have the time to get, get coached, skip to a certain rank or just get all the operators in one go.
Operators
Rainbow six siege released back in 2015 and has since then released many operators through its seasons. Most of the operators have gone up in complexity, which is why most of the operators in today’s list will probably be from the older seasons. But don’t worry, some newer ones are also very good for beginners, so there will be fresher operators ones here.
Operators divide into two teams, attackers and defenders.
Attackers
Sledge
Yes, this 2 health 2 speed hammer wielding operator is one of the simplest in the game, but he shouldn’t be underestimated. There are certain gadgets and strategies that defenders can employ that Sledge can circumvent. Such as Maestro’s pesky cameras or Castle’s more powerful barriers.
His trademark hammer can make a very big hole in breakable walls and floors, as well as destroying windows and doors in just one quick go. Be careful thought as once you hit a surface the hammer will take a very short time to go back to neutral, allowing you to switch to a weapon. This is a very short but vital time, as you can be rushed by the enemy team and killed before you can retaliate. As in most situations in this game, it’s recommended you go in with a teammate.
Regarding gadgets. You can equip him with flag, stun, and impact EMP grenades. This means Sledge doesn’t have any sort of counter to reinforced walls, so if the enemy team is smart with their barricades, your points of entry, might become too predictable. That’s why you have the rest of the team, though.
IQ
This operator, in my opinion, is the best for getting to know the map, camera placements and bomb spawn locations. Sitting at 1 health 3 speed, this character is very fragile, but she makes it up in her mobility and intel gathering capabilities. Her trademark gadget is the electronics detector.
This handy gadget will bring up a camera and allow you to detect anything with an electronic pulse through surfaces. This means cameras, enemy gadgets, bombs, every single electric gadget. Do you get it now? She’s an intel beast.
You can even ping them. They destroyed all your drones in the first phase of the game? No problem! Just bring up the electronics detector and roam around a little, and you’re bound to find them. Even if it’s in hostage mode, there’s bound to be enemy gadgets in the room with the hostage, so just point out anomalies, and you’ll surely find the objective quickly. Mute’s gadget can turn it off, but with a detection distance of 20 meters, you’ll surely know about his gadget before he finds out about yours.
Once you activate the electronics detector, you’ll pull out your secondary firearm, the P12 pistol, which I recommend equipping the silencer to so you can spot cameras and destroy them without having to worry about the enemy team finding out. Her gadgets include breach charges, claymores and frag grenades, so you can choose how to deal with a room after finding out most of what’s in it.
Thermite
This operator focuses on destroying reinforced walls, by now there are many characters that do, but none of them do it with the ease that he does it. This 2 health, 2 speed character starts the round with 2 Exothermic Charges. You just go up to a wall that’s been reinforced, places one of these bad boys into it, and that wall is going to be pretty much gone.
With this big breaching hole in their defenses, the other team will struggle to adapt to this unforeseen opening. This straight forward operator has only 2 options in gadgets, stun grenades and smoke grenades, which go hand in hand with his “take defenders by surprise” play style. Just keep in mind that once you activate these charges, they take quite a bit to explode. Giving the other team a chance to relocate.
Defenders
Solis
The first character not from the first season in my list, why’s that? Solis is effectively the defender’s version of IQ. 3 times per round she can activate her ability, which allows her to find attacker gadgets such as drones and phones! Unlike IQ, Solis cannot use any weapons while using her ability, and she’s left very vulnerable, so keep that in mind and use it from a safe place. Recon characters are usually pretty hard to use due to their high risk high reward style of gameplay, but I find her to be pretty reliable in all levels of gameplay. Her gadgets are proximity alarms and bulletproof cameras.
Rook
This 3 health 1 speed behemoth of an operator is one of the best supports in the game. Can he heal? No, but he’ll do you one better, you get to heal yourself! Rook starts the round equipped with an armor pack, each one of these has 5 uses that let’s everyone take one armor plate. This useful piece of armor guarantees less damage from explosions as well as a 15% defense increase. However, this doesn’t apply to headshots. Another neat thing it does is that you’re guaranteed to be downed when your health reaches 0 instead of dying, allowing you to be picked up to rejoin the fight, or you can even pick yourself back up!
The only downside to this is that if your whole team didn’t pick up a plate, the enemy team could potentially grab some, however this is a very rare occurrence.
Rook’s only gadget is the deployable shield, as if he wasn’t sturdy enough!
Bandit
This 1 health 3 speed Defense operator has a very useful ability. He can deploy his Shock wire on different reinforced equipment to make it become electrified. This means that the enemy team will have to either ignore that specific part of the map or try to destroy your ability in order to break the wall you’re protecting. Any breaching charge put to this wall will instantly break!
His gadgets are either a nitro cell or barbed wire which you can also electrify, although this is rarely useful because if you can see the wire you will also be able to see the shock wire.
Jäger
This 2 health 2 speed operator will make its team breathe a sigh of relief because of its very useful ability. The Magpie Defense System is a gadget you can glue to walls and floors, and it will destroy any towable that’s been tossed within 5.5 meters of it! Make sure to put it in a useful palace that’s not too open because it can be easily destroyed.
Jäger comes with a choice of a bulletproof camera or an observation blocker, which is very useful to hide your defense system!
In conclusion
Rainbow Six Siege is hardly beginner-friendly. But doesn’t it feel great when you pull off that winning move, or when your team just feels completely in sync? Because of that, it’s one of my favorite multiplayer games.
