You might not realize it, but your property might be the perfect breeding ground for cockroaches. There are a number of ways these dirty little pests can gain entry to buildings. They can pass through incredibly narrow cracks and crevices, sneak in through sewers, vents, and drains, or simply walk in through open windows and doors! Cockroaches are always attracted by the presence of food and moisture, and they seek safe places to shelter in, so the best way to prevent these unwelcome guests is to make sure they can’t enter in the first place!
There are a few simple measures you can take to prevent a cockroach infestation like keeping entrances closed and practising cleanliness and tidying up regularly. By far the best method is to engage the services of your local cockroach pest control who can use their expertise to remove any current squatters and then cockroach-proof your home so they can’t return!
The following are some of the things that you can do today to discourage a cockroach infestation!
Remove Any Possible Food Sources – The cockroach is one of the world’s most successful scavengers. They thrive in, and even prefer urban environments because they rely heavily on the large quantities of food that humans accidentally provide them with. The cockroach diet is quite similar to ours, they require sugar, protein, and carbohydrates to live. You can discourage cockroaches by depriving them of easy access to sustenance by removing potential food sources from your home, as follows:
Liquids – Similarly to rodents the cockroaches can go for a few weeks without drinking water as long as their food has a high moisture content. Even so, they still need to have it eventually, so deprive them from having easy access. Be sure to remove all standing water from any sinks and buckets so cockroaches won’t come sniffing around your property while searching for a water source.
Food – Never leave leftover food sitting out on countertops and tables in order to reduce your home’s appeal to cockroaches. Cockroaches don’t actually eat that much, they only require tiny amounts of food for their meals, so be sure to quickly tidy up any spilled liquid foods, crumbs, powders, and used snack packaging so there will be nothing for them to dine on.
Rubbish Bins – These are a cockroach smorgasbord, often chock-full of food for them to consume. Be sure to empty your bins regularly, preferably every day.
Cockroaches are a dirty little health menace, so don’t unwittingly welcome them into your home!
